For special occasions: the tailcoat
A tailcoat is perfect for special occasions. Formal menswear was only partially superseded by the dinner jacket in the early 1920s and is therefore still considered the king of menswear today. Nowadays, the tailcoat is mainly worn as part of a suit for particularly festive evening occasions (from 6 p.m.).
What makes the perfect tailcoat?
The term "tailcoat" is generally used to describe a jacket that is short at the waist and has the typical lapels (dovetails) at the back. The shirt, waistcoat and bow tie are referred to together as a tailcoat set. However, the entire tailcoat suit (with waistcoat and trousers) is often referred to as a tailcoat.
- Tailcoat:
The tailcoat is black (rarely dark blue) and has the classic swallowtails on the back. - Trousers:
The tailcoat trousers have neither turn-ups nor pleats. - Tailcoat shirt:
The white tailcoat shirt is decorated with a cotton piqué shirtfront. Cuffs made of mother-of-pearl or diamante and a protruding collar round off the shirt. - Tailcoat waistcoat:
The white waistcoat usually has two inset waistcoat pockets and, like the tailcoat itself, is fitted with lapels. The tailcoat waistcoat can be single-breasted or double-breasted. A white bow is worn with it.
